Quando un pugile si allena allo specchio, tirando e schivando con la sua immagine riflessa, si dice che sta ‘boxando con l'ombra'. L'espressione è così bella che ci porta inevitabilmente a vedervi impresse allusioni metaforiche: anche se sul ring ci si scazzotta in due, il pugile è sempre solo con se stesso, lui e il proprio lato oscuro. La figura epica e turbolenta di Jake LaMotta porta, sul proprio corpo martoriato, decenni di cinema sulla boxe, distillando alla perfezione la vena ostinata e disperata dei suoi protagonisti. "Il tema del film è la sopravvivenza", dice Scorsese. LaMotta, nel corso di una vita inimitabile, lotta all'ultimo sangue per sopravvivere a se stesso, tentando vanamente di non precipitare nella spirale delle proprie nevrosi e dei propri fallimenti. "Combattimenti regolari non ne esistono", aggiunge Scorsese, riferendosi forse più alla vita che allo sport, e mettendoci davanti alla fatica immane che ognuno deve affrontare sul proprio ring privato. Anche per questo Toro scatenato, con tutto il carico di brutalità che lo accompagna, è un film spirituale. Oltre a essere una malinconica lezione sul tempo e sulla vocazione distruttiva dello spettacolo. Tra cent'anni, sarà ancora uno dei film più grandi di sempre.
