Il regista Salvador Mallo si trova in una crisi sia fisica che creativa. Tornano quindi nella sua memoria i giorni dell'infanzia povera in un paesino nella zona di Valencia, un film da cui aveva finito per dissociarsi una volta terminato e tanti altri momenti fondamentali della sua vita.
Almodóvar (come si definisce ormai in forma icastica da tempo nei titoli di testa dei suoi film) torna ad essere Pedro (anche se sotto le mentite spoglie di Salvador Mallo) e ci parla di sé, del proprio malessere, della difficoltà di portare avanti il pavesiano mestiere di vivere sotto il cielo di Madrid. Lo fa tenendo sotto controllo quel tanto di automanierismo che progressivamente si era insinuato nel suo cinema e, soprattutto, lasciandosi andare sul piano emotivo. Ciò che non era accaduto in La mala educaciòn, film anch'esso legato al suo vissuto giovanile, avviene qui. Grazie anche alla scelta del giusto alter ego.
