Troia è caduta sotto le armi achee. La regina Ecuba, madre di Paride e di Ettore, ha trascorso una
notte insonne sulle sponde della città: suo marito Priamo è stato sgozzato, i suoi numerosi figli sono
morti sul campo di battaglia e Cassandra, la figlia veggente, maledetta da Apollo, è stata scelta come
schiava nel letto di Agamennone. La tragedia comincia dal crollo di una stirpe, destinata a sparire con
la morte del nipote Astianatte.

L’uomo non può ribellarsi. Per natura è destinato a soffrire, a conoscere il dolore, ad attraversarlo nel
modo più faticoso possibile per poter sperare, un giorno, di lasciarselo alle spalle. La dignità, d’altro
canto, è tutto ciò che ci resta e che ci conforta in situazioni atroci, quando sembra che nessuno possa
soccorrerci: l’Ecuba del passato diviene un’ancora, un appiglio a cui stringersi saldamente, mentre, al
presente, questa donna combatte affinché la memoria delle sue genti non cada nell’oblio.
Ecuba denuncia la guerra. Denuncia i soprusi. Spinge l’uomo a capire quanto la natura umana
protenda al sadismo, alla barbarità da cui tanto è intenzionata a distinguersi; la morte di un bambino,
scaraventato giù dalle mura, non può arrivare alle nostre coscienze come un atto di eroismo, come
un’azione necessaria affinché la patria possa mettere fine ad un conflitto irragionevole, promosso da
un inequivocabile egoismo: Elena e Menelao, vincitori indenni, sono l’anima d’una società perversa
che da duemilacinquecento anni è lo specchio di se stessa.
