Mescolare
commedia e dramma è notoriamente difficile, ma L’appartamento lo fa
sembrare facile. Come un Martini perfettamente dosato, il film ha quel
tanto di emozione che basta a compensare il suo paralizzante caustico
cinismo. Il risultato è uno dei film più amati e appaganti di Billy
Wilder. Tra satira spietata e fascino esuberante, L’appartamento alterna
momenti dolorosi come un pugno allo stomaco e scene esilaranti.
Ispirandosi a un’idea scribacchiata dopo aver visto Breve incontro
(1945), Wilder prende la storia pruriginosa di un impiegato che per far
carriera presta il suo appartamento ai superiori in vena di scappatelle e
la trasforma in una sorprendente e sentita difesa della dignità umana.
Jack Lemmon, mai così divertente e così commovente, è un uomo che fa del
suo meglio per conformarsi a una cultura volgare, superficiale e
spudoratamente sessista. Shirley MacLaine infonde un brio corroborante
in colei che è una vittima di tale cultura, una donna che sembra
prendere le distanze da se stessa esprimendo commenti taglienti sul
proprio pathos. Sono circondati da un cast di personaggi secondari
disegnati con il tratto elastico ed esuberante delle caricature di Al
Hirschfeld, cui Wilder e I.A.L. Diamond mettono in bocca battute
gioiosamente chiassose e intelligenti. Le scenografie di Alexandre
Trauner, valorizzate dall’incisiva fotografia in bianco e nero di Joseph
LaShelle in formato widescreen, ricreano con ricchezza e
verosimiglianza la New York degli anni Cinquanta. Wilder si portò a casa
tre Oscar (sceneggiatura, regia e miglior film) e lasciò agli
spettatori la vigilia di Natale più allegramente deprimente, la partita
di carte più struggente e forse la più esilarante preparazione di un
