La rarità è il detonatore della curiosità umana.

Quando, inaspettatamente, ci troviamo di fronte al raro nella mente si affacciano domande: cos’è, perché, come mai; ed è una meraviglia perché le domande sono il motore del progresso; senza domande non esisterebbe la scienza.

Ma questa che viviamo è un’era frenetica: possedere interstizi di quiete in cui porsi delle domande è, esso stesso, un evento raro. Perché rallentare, chiedersi un perché e poi riflettere, sono atti mentali contrari al principio di produttività così di moda oggigiorno.

La società moderna è orientata all’efficienza; l’efficienza è il prodotto della logica, quella logica cartesiana che ebbe la meglio sulla magia, sulle credenze e sulle paure del medioevo. Come non credere, dunque, al potere della logica? Difficile resistergli. Così, oggi, in nome della logica, ci siamo convinti che l’importante sia avere le risposte. Fin da piccoli: il moderno modello educativo impone di conoscere la risposta giusta, l’unica possibile, l’unica logica. I test a crocette ne sono un esempio: misurano la competenza dell’uomo in modo molto efficiente.

Efficiente, ma mentalmente paralizzante; la storia ci ha insegnato che la stragrande maggioranza dei primati della scienza e della tecnologia sono il frutto di inattese combinazioni di circostanze. C’è una parola inglese che esprime questo concetto: “serendipity”. Serendipity è la penicillina di un Fleming curioso di fronte a una piastra di Petri priva di coltura che si domanda: "Perché?"

Una piastra di Petri non può rispondere, ma quando a essere rara è una persona abbiamo l’occasione di arricchire la nostra idea di mondo ascoltando la risposta direttamente da lei. Cosa vuol dire essere rari? Robert Oppenheimer, il novello Prometeo che ha donato all’uomo l’energia dell’atomo, è stato anche Ermes, messaggero dei pericoli che il suo dono nascondeva, ma inascoltato. E dunque: quanto vale il punto di vista di chi è raro?

Questo evento ospita storie rare. La speranza è che, domani, guarderemo tutti la rarità con un occhio diverso, sensibile al potenziale che deriva dall’unicità. Domani, incontrando una inusuale singolarità, vedremo in essa lo scambio che potrebbe portare il nostro pensiero fuori dai binari della consuetudine verso una meta nuova, impensata, originale e chissà, risolutrice di grandi problemi. Non abbiate paura di ciò che è raro: in effetti cela un’occasione.

Rarity is the trigger for human curiosity.

When, unexpectedly, we are faced with the rare, questions arise in the mind: what is it, why, how come, and it is a wonder because questions are the engine of progress; without questions there would be no science.

But what we are living in is a frenetic era: possessing quiet interstices in which to ask questions is itself a rare event. Because slowing down, wondering why and then reflecting, are mental acts contrary to the principle of productivity so fashionable nowadays.

Modern society is oriented towards efficiency; efficiency is the product of logic, that Cartesian logic that prevailed over magic, beliefs and fears of the Middle Ages. How can we fail to believe in the power of logic? It is difficult to resist it. So, today, in the name of logic, we are convinced that the important thing is to have the answers. From an early age: the modern educational model requires knowing the right answer, the only possible one, the only logic. Cross tests are an example: they measure human competence very efficiently.

Efficient, but mentally paralyzing; history has taught us that the vast majority of primates in science and technology are the result of unexpected combinations of circumstances. There is an English word that expresses this concept: "Serendipity". Serendipity is the penicillin of a curious Fleming in front of a culturless Petri dish that asks, "Why?"

A Petri dish cannot respond, but when what is rare is a person, we have the opportunity to enrich our idea of the world by listening to the answer directly from her. What does it mean to be rare? Robert Oppenheimer, the new Prometheus who gave man the energy of the atom, was also Hermes, messenger of the perils that his gift concealed, but unheard of. And so: how much is it worth the point of view of who is rare?

This event hosts rare stories. The hope is that, tomorrow, we will all look at rarity with a different eye, sensitive to the potential that comes from uniqueness. Tomorrow, encountering an unusual singularity, we will see in it the switch that could take off our thought from the groove of tradition towards a new goal, unexpected, original and who knows, capable of solving great problems. Do not be afraid of what is rare: in fact it conceals an opportunity.

Because we are the happy consequence of the encounter with the rare.
