"Mi sembra che il volto di Donaldino [Donald Sutherland] fosse perfettamente adatto all'immagine di un italiano immaturo, infantile, una specie di Pinocchio nell'utero, che era l'immagine che avevo del vero Casanova, che consideravo essere uno stronzo, uno stupido, un idiota. Solo un grande attore professionista come Sutherland poteva effettivamente incarnare queste qualità negative. [...] Il Casanova fu il prodotto della disarmante intenzione di un regista di prendere delle parti della sua vita e gridare le sue scoperte dai tetti di Roma. Il film m'insegnò che l'assenza dell'amore è la peggiore sofferenza che si possa sopportare" (Federico Fellini).
