Dopo la “rivoluzione Psycho”, che nel 1960 cancellò le definizioni di thriller e horror conosciute fino ad allora, terrorizzando il pubblico e ottenendo un successo senza precedenti, gli anni ’70 e ’80 segnarono il trionfo dell’horror d’autore.
I film appartenenti a questo periodo, e firmati da registi importanti, avevano tutti qualcosa in comune: più che le caratteristiche classiche del genere, mostravano l’impronta dell'autore e la sua interpretazione dell’horror.
Mi riferisco a cineasti del calibro di Stanley Kubrick (Shining, 1980), Roman Polanski (Rosemary’s Baby, 1968), Werner Herzog (Nosferatu, 1978) e naturalmente William Friedkin (L’esorcista, 1973).
Tratto dall’omonimo romanzo di William Peter Blatty, che ne firma personalmente l’adattamento cinematografico, L’esorcista racconta la storia di Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair), una ragazzina che inizia a mostrare comportamenti strani e inquietanti. Quando la medicina fallisce nel trovare una spiegazione, ma soprattutto una cura, Chris, la madre di Regan (Ellen Burstyn) si rivolge a un prete: è convinta che sua figlia sia posseduta dal demonio e vuole che venga esorcizzata.Barbra Streisand, Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine e Jane Fonda rifiutarono il ruolo di Chris MacNeil, mentre per la parte di Regan venne presa in considerazione, e poi scartata, una giovanissima Sharon Stone.
Anche Melanie Griffith e Kim Basinger fecero il provino per interpretare Regan.
Premiato con 2 Oscar (per la migliore sceneggiatura non originale e per i migliori effetti sonori) e 4 Golden Globes (miglior film, migliore sceneggiatura, migliore regia e migliore attrice non protagonista), L’Esorcista è il primo horror i cui meriti artistici vengono riconosciuti sia dal pubblico che dalla critica, e il primo a ottenere delle nomination agli Oscar (e a vincerne due).
Per molti - come emerge da celebri sondaggi e classifiche - è il film più spaventoso di tutti i tempi.
