Giulia De Martino vive in una cascina nella campagna dell'Emilia Romagna con il fratellino Nico. Sua madre se ne è andata (più volte) di casa, e suo fratello maggiore Loris, una leggenda dell'automobilismo da rally, è diventato un "tossico di merda" parcheggiato in una roulotte. Quando anche il padre di Giulia, che aveva scommesso su di lei come futura campionessa di Gran Turismo usando come collaterale la cascina, la lascia sola, Giulia si trova a gestire lo sfratto incipiente, il fratellino spaesato e il fratellone avido dell'eredità paterna. Ma la vera eredità dei De Martino è quella benzina che scorre loro nelle vene insieme al sangue e quel talento di famiglia, ostinato e rabbioso, per le quattro ruote.
Lo spunto è una storia vera raccontata al regista da un meccanico scomparso l'anno scorso, cui sul grande schermo dà il volto segnato e la recitazione misurata l'ottimo Paolo Graziosi.
Volano davvero, le auto da corsa di Veloce come il vento, così come sono davvero matti e disperatissimi i loro piloti (il che ispira la battuta migliore del film), giovani o vecchi, maschi o femmine. Perché uno dei (tanti) pregi del film di Rovere è che racconta (senza mai sottolinearlo con facile retorica e ancor più facile piaggeria nei confronti del pubblico femminile) un mondo dove le pari opportunità sono reali: Giulia gareggia da sempre insieme ai piloti uomini, e tutto ciò che conta è l'asfalto che brucia e la grinta che sa dimostrare al volante.
